Bone Awl - Meaningless Leaning Mess (2007)

Genre: Black Metal/Punk
Country: United States

Bone Awl have been hard at work creating some of the noisiest, filthiest, blackened filth since 2002; however, nothing they've ever done compares to Meaningless Leaning Mess. Though often credited as the scene leaders of blackened punk along with Sump, Sexdrome, and Grinning Death's Head, if it weren't for Bone Awl, none of the those bands would exist, as well as a thousand others that currently occupy the dark depths of the current black metal scene. They may be mentioned quite frequently, but I don't really feel like anyone really, REALLY appreciates how so much of the raw and punk-y black metal today stems from this heinous duo, and their apocalyptic take on two of music's most anti-social genres. It's hilarious because this release -and to a greater extent the whole discography of Bone Awl - is nothing but horribly produced three chord anthems that most people would consider to be absolute garbage. But that's also what makes them so awesome; there is no pretense, no kind of hook to draw people in... just one song after another of oddly catchy punk songs you can croak along too. Meaningless Leaning Mess is pure misanthropy set to d-beat drums, and crusty guitar riffs, and yet somehow it's become one of the most influential pieces of music to permeate black metal culture in decades. Recommended.

Galloping Shadow - Winters Web (2012)

Genre: Black Metal/Punk
Country: United States of America

Well executed punk-infused black metal made by one half of  Bone Awl. Not dissimilar to Bone Awl either. Extremely raw and fast. Highly recommend.

For fans of Raspberry Bulbs, Ildjarn and of course Bone Awl.

Bhang Khang - Demo (2011)

Genre: Black Metal/Hardcore/Sludge
Country: United States

As recent years have seen a boom in punk and hardcore influenced black metal it was really only a matter of time before grim face-painted warriors of darkness began to dabble in one of hardcore's most aggressive forms, powerviolence. This is where the United States based Bhang Khang come in - formed in 2011, the group to date has only a single demo to their name but their extremely tight performance coupled with obvious compositional talent easily makes it one of the best black metal/hardcore demos I've heard in recent years.

While powerviolence and black metal play a much more prevalent role in Bhang Khang's sound the band does occasionally slow it down for a heavy, trudging sludge breakdown, adding even more depth to Bhang Khang's sonic stew. The juxtaposition of the band's central genres is displayed rather cleverly in a diverse array of ways here, sometimes showing the two existing within a single riff and other times with a more clear-cut separation. Overall they are balanced quite nicely, and with sludge's slow paced, bass laced crawl breaking up the blinding speed of PV and BM, the album avoids a certain monotony while also lending towards its overall longevity. In only a ten minute span a listen to Bhang Khang's 2011 Demo is definitely a bang worth its buck and should definitely be explored by anyone who listens to hardcore, black metal and/or fancies a combination of the two.

Carved Cross / Sump - Split (2013)

Genre: Raw Black Metal
Country: Australia / England

A great split release here between two awesome bands, Carved Cross open proceedings with two songs of hypnotic no-fi black metal that is as raw as it is trance inducing.  On the flip side, Sump seem to be inspired by Carved Cross' lo-fi aesthetic and opt for an even rawer than usual production style.  Churning out 4 punky black metal stomps that deliver their own charm yet somehow keeping the feel of the split cohesive.  Maybe a bit too raw for some, but if lo-fi/raw black metal is your thing you need to get this in your life.

White Medal - Yorkshire Heathen Black Metal (2012)

Genre: Black Metal
Country: England

George Proctor is a name synonymous with the burgeoning underground black metal scene in England, being part of or even the sole member (as is the case here) of a myriad of projects that range in musical styles.  White Medal is one of mr Proctors solo projects and is also one of his best, this compilation release sees the Agbrigg beast & Alone As Owt demos compiled together along with the song "Northumbrian Tyrants" as well as two previously unreleased songs (that apparently came from the alone as owt sessions).  15 Songs of raw punk driven black metal that demands attention, a perfect starting place for anyone new to the band.

Woes - Valley Of Desolation (2013)

Genre: Black Metal / Crust Punk
Country: England

Woes hail from Bradford, England and came to us last year with this their first demo.  Just under 20 minutes of raw hate filled crust punk influenced black metal which at times segues into slow trudging doom sections that carry a feeling of violent menace.  Awesome stuff for anyone who likes punk influenced black metal.

Akatharsia - Demo (2014)

Genre: Black Metal
Country: United States

Akatharsia is a new project in it's relative infancy that features members of Fell Voices and Negative Standards, a really good demo that takes a relatively direct black metal approach (in terms of fell voices huge compositions) with a good punkish stomp making things even catchy at times.  Great first demo from what looks like a promising young project.

They Came At Dawn - CDr Demo (2011)

Genre: Blackened Crust / Hardcore
Country: United States

Black metal influenced crust / hardcore featuring members of Ash Borer and Unholy Crucifix.  Not much is known about this now defunct project, this their only release comprised of 3 tracks of intense hate fueled  violent crust was a glimpse of what might have been.  The Ash Borer riffing style is apparent pretty much from the start as the first of the three untitled tracks bursts into life with a tornado of riffs and incomprehensible screams.  Pretty much as soon as it has started it seemingly ends (much like the project) leaving you wanting more, violent and addictive this release deserves to be heard by more people.  There has been rumblings of a posthumous release in the form of a 6 track EP through psychic violence records, but that has yet to materialize.  So for now we are left with these 3 solitary tracks of blackened punk fury and many unanswered questions about what might have been.

Grand Mood - Final Urge To March (2011)

Genre:Blackened Punk
Country:United States

Black metal and punk go together like expired cheese and stale crackers - PERFECTLY. While nowadays there are PLENTY of these kinds of bands flooding the market, I find Grand Mood to be a bit better than most. They just have a more "epic" feel about them, despite the fact that they really don't do anything THAT much different. Don't make that excuse to ignore these guys though - this is very, VERY much worth checking out.
